FYI: I've tested and the NNTP/SMTP combination in Thunderbird for gmane
use does lead to not being able to deliver messages to gname.discuss via
just a newsgroup specification. (For all I know that is a plain
newsgroup instead of an odd way to access a Mail List.)

Ultimately, FreeBSD Mailing List use is all I'm trying to have a better
interface for. Otherwise I'd not be using either Thunderbird or gmane at
all. But the notes about things tried and the mix of behaviors may prove
useful to others.
