Success with ZFS at zstd-19 (an extreme):

root@vbox:/ # mount | grep cd
/dev/iso9660/15_0_CURRENT_AMD64_DVD on / (cd9660, local, read-only)
root@vbox:/ # zfs get compression,compressratio zroot
NAME PROPERTY VALUE SOURCE
zroot compression zstd-19 local
zroot compressratio 2.88x -
root@vbox:/ # zpool list -v
NAME SIZE ALLOC FREE CKPOINT EXPANDSZ FRAG CAP DEDUP
HEALTH ALTROOT
zroot 960M 326M 634M - - 26% 33% 1.00x
ONLINE /mnt
  ada1p2 1022M 326M 634M - - 26% 33.9% -

root@vbox:/ # exit

Off-topic: I could not boot the installed system, I'll remove ada0 from the
virtual machine then repeat the installation.
