I did ask both Supermicro and the system vendor meanwhile.
SM says that they will not support any configuration that has not been
assembled in-house with them because of nvme hotplug being plagued with
many issues so only specific configurations could work.
The vendor blamed this on the AOC retimer cards have. Swapping disks would
require re-issuing a new pcie device id, which is not possible with the
retimer card until being rebooted.
