Looking at freshports.org (again), it doesn't seem like it should cause 
any problems. postfix uses LMDB, but has no relationship with libetpan 
as I can see. Dovecot has no relationship with either.

I have never tried using libetpan without LMDB (nor with, for that 
matter), so my answers are only based on the information I can see 
looking at the dependencies listed on freshports.org.

According to the options for libetpan, it uses LMDB for caching, so, 
using it without might impact performance.
