Thanks for the suggestion. I had not, this was a clean install of 14.2
on a new disk. That said, I have seen that clear up strange XFCE issues
in the past.

Alas, not this time, that changed nothing other than the message
   Unable to load image from folder "(null)"
popped up three times instead of two.
