xcalc missing fonts

Recently upgraded 13.4 -> 13.5, deleted and reinstalled all ports.
running xcalc, some of the buttons have the wrong symbols,
e.g. a ',' is displayed for the division symbol.

When running from an xterm, on startup I see:

~$ xcalc

The only thing I found referencing something like this was this:
   https://github.com/termux/termux-packages/issues/23002

/usr/local/etc/X11/fontpath.d and xorg.conf.d are both empty.

It's my understanding all that's needed is xorg-fonts-100dpi or -75dpi
and way back when I'm pretty sure that was the case.
