And how do you want to power the DIY smartphone? Did you think about
stand-by time and talk time?

I'm one of those people who only use landlines, but if I ever wanted to
use a smartphone and then take the risk of trying it with FreeBSD or
Linux, I would look at what existing smartphones are supported and what
limitations are involved. There are some projects out there, but
depending on the hardware, not everything works reliably, if at all.
