I was able to get into single-user mode (it runs in a VM). Changed root's
password.

bsdinstall seems like the way forward but the distribution tarballs are
coming with mismatched checksums? Is that an artifact of not having access
to ssl/libcrypt?  Ah, now they are working. Fingers crossed i can reboot
into a networked, multiuser system.
