This is a very cool project.

I will admit, my original question was motivated mostly by my backward
desire to "have" the data that I intend to work with on my own drive
(ideally in convenient format). I won't attempt to justify that
preference. I do agree with Kurt that ideally, archives should be
complete. I acknowledge that this is a modern sensibility.

Easily mirroring archives is worth making some noise about, I think.
However, as Polarian pointed out, just scraping most archive sites is
pretty straightforward. Rand's procedure has worked well enough for me.
