It works best with zfs and a clean boot environment. https://people.freebsd.org/~dch/posts/2021-02-23-sideloading-freebsd/ it's clearly very mad scientist experimental, expect some breakage as you merge various things. This guide was targeted at zfs, because boot environments are incredible at reducing the pain. Don't forget to keep your EFI partition / boot blocks up to date.
