---> As for the argument that it's worth doing to learn how things work,
unless you expect to do something like this again, it's not clear that it's
a good use of one's time. Sure, it can be satisfying to make FreeBSD run on
an ipod or clock radio but how practical is the knowledge gained there? Not
many mechanics of my experience learn how to forge spanners and wrenches
that can be easily purchased.

I think that one can learn something from almost everything. Concerning
me,I have to say that I do what I like and I try to learn from that. I
don't care if I can take some shortcut or not. Regarding the specific
case,I'm almost excited to try and to learn how to upgrade an old FreeBSD
system to the newest one. It would be a jump from the past, when I didn't
use FreeBSD until today,to see how this OS evolved. This is the perfect
paradigm for the life of someone. It's so important to understand how I was
when I was young, and then adolescent and then man. Is important to
understand which factors and relations between the context and my inner
self have been involved in the growth.
