...and sure enough it still is, and I'm an idiot.

I've spent much much too long focusing on flags and connection settings,
without double checking that the actual basics were alright, because they
weren't.

I managed to overlook that I hadn't connected the RS232<->TTL adapter to the 
power supply pin on the board header. Once that was done, everything was fine.


So yeah - "basic stuff" indeed.
