This issue is real and I have it too:
OPTIONS_UNSET+=EXAMPLES
OPTIONS_UNSET+=TEST
OPTIONS_UNSET+=DEBUG
OPTIONS_UNSET+=DOCS
OPTIONS_UNSET+=RDOC

but it is a different discussion. Subpackages were supposed to solve this.

Rust is a pain in every regard.
