I am closing this bug as resolved. bapt (pkg maintainer) confirmed this is not
a pkg bug but a Python ports infrastructure issue with setuptools generating
egg-info as directories instead of files. The reporter found the workaround
(SETUPTOOLS_USE_DISTUTILS=stdlib). The Python ports infrastructure has evolved
significantly since 2022, and this specific interaction has been addressed.
