The upstream fix of devel/py-pyproject-hooks is completely irrelevant here.

In-place builds of Python package ports are generally not supported. Please use
poudriere or another method of isolating build environments. It is unfortunate
but in-place builds are generally not supported in the greater Python community
due to version pinning and other things I (and others here) don't agree with or
like.
