I can confirm that matrix-synapse cannot start without simplejson installed, as
comment #0 described.

It's a bit weird as devel/py-simplejson also doesn't show up in `make
run-depends-list` in 1.80 or 1.82.0

It seems upstream removed the dependency of simplejson in 2020:
https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/blob/develop/docs/changelogs/CHANGES-2020.md
and `grep simplejson` shows nothing in the code.  It's not in the
pyproject.toml file, either.

I suspect it is an indirect dependency so we might want to fix it in
net-im/py-matrix-synapse's dependency.
