Upon looking into the 3.8 branch, the original commit that caused the hanging
is not backported into it. According to the python site, 3.8 and 3.9 is only
getting security updates now.
That said, I can't even get python to compile in the 3.8 branch now, checking
out from the source. Probably there was some patch in ports involved which I
didn't apply:
