It seems like you didn't stop the MariaDB server before doing the upgrade.

Try to stop it with
    # service mysql-server stop

and the list running processes
    # ps auxww | egrep 'mariadb|mysql'

I think mariadb will not stop with newer rc script and you will need to 
kill it manually.
