Bug ID: 296083
Summary: www/grafana: elasticsearch plugin issues
Product: Ports & Packages
Version: Latest
Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: ---
Component: Individual Port(s)

Whenever I start grafana, it logs an error about the elasticsearch plugin:
{
"error":"fork/exec
/var/db/grafana/plugins/elasticsearch/gpx_grafana_elasticsearch_datasource_freebsd_amd64:
no such file or directory",
"level":"error",
"logger":"plugins.initialization",
"msg":"Could not initialize plugin",
"pluginId":"elasticsearch",
"t":"2026-06-16T02:09:40.004008086-04:00"
}
This is accompanied by a similar error, except with logger
"plugins.backend.start" and msg:"Could not start plugin backend". There are
also a couple info messages that are essentially the same thing.
So, first of all: It's correct when it says that that file
(gpx_grafana_elasticsearch_datasource_freebsd_amd64) does not exist. The
directory (/var/db/grafana/plugins/elasticsearch) *does* exist, and it contains
various other files with similar names but for other OSes and architectures.
There are none at all for FreeBSD.
Moreover, searching Google for the name of that missing file returns zero hits.
Now, with that said: I don't use elasticsearch, and I don't care about this
plugin. I do want grafana to stop complaining about it, though. So, following
some instructions I found on Grafana's site...
https://grafana.com/docs/grafana/latest/administration/plugin-management/#uninstall-a-plugin
... I went into my Grafana instance's Plugins page to uninstall it.
Unfortunately, the instructions quickly diverged from reality. After step 2
("Click the plugin’s logo"), there *is* no "Uninstall" shown on the page (as
mentioned in step 4 ("Click Uninstall")).
Brief side note: It actually diverges from reality in step 3 ("Click the
Installed filter to show only installed plugins"). There is no such filter once
you follow step 2; it sure seems like these two steps are listed backwards. But
whatever, back to the main story:
I guess maybe this is because it's a built-in plugin? So I searched some more,
and found that things can be removed via the Grafana CLI. I tried that...
grafana cli plugins remove elasticsearch
... and it deleted the /var/db/grafana/plugins/elasticsearch directory.
However, upon restarting Grafana, it just reappeared, once again without the
FreeBSD/AMD64 file, and once again the errors were logged.
Next I searched for how to disable (rather than remove it), and found another
page on Grafana's website...
https://community.grafana.com/t/strip-down-grafana-to-bare-minimum/144315
... describing how to disable a plugin via the config file (and explicitly
saying that you *can* do this for built-in plugins). So I tried that, adding...
[plugins]
disable_plugin = elasticsearch
... to my grafana.ini. This had no noticeable effect (even after restarting
again); the errors persisted.
Is there any way to stop this? Does the missing FreeBSD/AMD64 file actually
exist anywhere? If not, is something wrong with the instructions I found on how
to remove and/or disable the plugin? Or something wrong with my understanding
of them?
Thanks in advance for any help.
