sems 1.7.2

please commit this prior to #290131 to resurrect a working 1.7.x in our tree
history for us gray beards. this is the latest and likely final 1.x

this port was marked broken in #277816

i'll follow up on #290131 to update port to 2.0.1 soon unless Nathan beats me
to it
