History repeats itself each and every time even if its with good intentions. I
can point you to many ports (in tree or other repos) where this approach was
utilized and now is bitrotten and/or very outdated compared to upstream.

We have a very few examples which this works in practice (Chrome for example)
but they are very few and far between.

This can be of course be re-evaluated once a _reasonable_ attempt to upstream
patches have been tried and upstream refuses.
