Ah, you're right about that.

I installed it via pkg first, then wanted to switch to the port and forgot the
autoremove in between.

I can reproduce, as soon you cleanup and build again, it no longer works.

I reported it upstream as this seems like a upstream bug to me. If you have the
option to disable it, it should build without it
