Valid points.

Given I was asked to do the work, this was my reaching out publicly to the
MAINTAINER before beginning, just in case the work had been done, abandoned,
etc, before I started in.

I'm hoping that any "No, don't do that because..." messages can arrive before I
being work on it. :)
