In answer to your question, /etc/make.conf contains:
SENDMAIL_CF_DIR=        /usr/local/share/sendmail/cf
DEFAULT_VERSIONS+= python-3.11

Before "these problems", it did not have the python entry.

I did do a "git pull" on my ports tree.

I did not install 14.3 from source - used freebsd-upgrade (whatever), but I
probably have done a "git pull" on that tree as well.

I have successfully installed and used VirtualBox via binaries marked for
specifically for 14.3, which did not exist when I started this process.

I don't know how long I have had Python-3.9, but still have 9 such packages
installed, along with a plethora of Python-3.11 packages. I assume that it is
"safe" for me to remove all of the Python-9 modules?
