I am not sold on the idea of keeping parallel versions of everything.  If we
keep an old version to give others time to move, we need to put an expiration
on it -- but we shouldn't do that if by and large the changes to downstream
ports are tiny.  It's also a good opportunity to weed out mostly-unused niche
software that was given up by the upstream maintainers.  Niche software means
security researchers aren't paying attention to them and severe bugs may linger
for years and compromise one's system, and in case something happens, you're
not getting fixes.
