Also, running your own `git clone` during custom fetch target is not
recommended. 

BTW, I found that checking out code from git.tt-rss.org (cgit) instead of
gitlab is recommended on tt-rss.org.  However, unfortunately, they disable
downloading snapshot tarball from cgit intentionally.  

So, I think the current way would be the best option so far.
