My recommendation is to land the update to 10.2 and proceed incrementally. One benefit is that it makes it easier to catch and bisect regressions. Maybe the two of you can sync and split the work? (And, yes, FreeBSD's support for 32-bit libraries and apps on a 64-bit system and mixing the two is ... not great.
