Of course it does, it just needs config and theme files as it says in the log. 
I've changed the port so it copies default system-wide ones under
~/.config/gorss to reduce first-time user's confusion.

No it doesn't really /need/ it, only as a last resort.  There's probably
something wrong with your environment; to start with, what's the value of
$TERM?
