how to reproduce:

  firefox --profile $(mktemp -d -t firefox) &
then File -> Open 

starting a file picker dialog from either of these apps causes the entire
browser to crash.

last message, whether from firefox or chromium, is:

tested with fresh (empty) profiles.
feh has no trouble displaying the image-missing.png
