GCC 5, which this seems to be based on, went end of life in 2017 - six
years ago.

Instead of trying to hack that old codebase updating to a newer version
of GCC probably makes more sense.

(Note that GCC 5.2 is not even the last in that release series. It is
possible, though not likely, that a later GCC 5.x release actually has
this addressed.)
