(In reply to Matthias Andree from comment #14)

More than pkg 2.* is involved: the distribution servers have to publish
the related data that pkg rwhich uses.

The likes of https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:16:amd64/latest/files.pkg
generation/publishing on the distribution servers still has not been
reenabled, hiding the status of the implementation by making the
involved feature not yet publicly useable.

Recent ports-mgmt/pkg-devel commits have referenced the likes of
"speed up pkg rwhich". I expect that is a reference to part of the
on-going implementation effort for the feature that lead to the huge
files for a time.

My guess is that this should be closed only when the feature has been
enabled for public use (not just temporarily) and has been shown to
be reasonable for its storage requirements (or having a way to opt
out of or into ending up with a copy of a huge file).

But it is true that the size issue is not active as stands --and that
pkg rwhich is not yet publicly working:

# pkg -v
2.8.4

# pkg repos FreeBSD-ports | grep url
    url : "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:16:amd64/latest",

# pkg rwhich -rFreeBSD-ports pkg
pkg was not found in the repository catalogue

# man pkg | grep rwhich
     pkg-repo(8), pkg-repositories(8), pkg-rquery(8), pkg-rwhich(8),

# man pkg-rwhich
No manual entry for "pkg-rwhich"
