[Bug 297065] ports-mgmt/pkg: pkg-2.8.1: pkg update -r FreeBSD-ports creates the db file with a size of 1.6 Giga(!)bytes

the directory looks like this:
total 49 MB

-rw-r--r--  1 root wheel    0B 260727_0101 lock
-rw-r--r--  1 root wheel  162B 260726_1614 meta

with the db file back to its normal size.

Now please explain what had happened before. 
What was or still is wrong with the repo?
