Another approach, then, is to assign what we might as well call a "step number"
to each package being worked on, with each package being assigned its step
number the first time pkg operates on it in the current session.  At least we
know the total number of packages before we begin.  And people are used to
seeing one step number more than once per session.  But now it's possible for
the step number we see to change non-monotonically, as we start working on
package B only to return to working on package A before continuing B.  (I
think.)
