Sigh... Maybe, you, gentlemen, can pick the useful parts of my proposal? It is
too late for the switch to 7z -- because the FreeBSD network of mirrors is
already downloading the .tar.bz2 variant -- so it'd have to wait for the 1.89.

But the GIL-parts, and the enabling of statat() and friends can be added now...
