I can't see libboost required by abiword via ldd, but it's required for
installation. I removed the libboost libraries from my system and was still
able to run abiword.

Is this an unnecessary dependency, or is it required in some way that isn't
obvious?

Kind of a heavy requirement if we can avoid it.
