Viewing old video? alternative to xine?

Hi,

I'm having trouble playing some old video clips with xine-0.99.14_5
on 14.2-RELEASE-p1

kdenlive handles all of the below just fine, but I'm looking for a
simple player to use to help catalog before editing.

30 year old analog PAL format video was converted/transferred
to miniDV tapes about 20 years ago since imported via iMovie
file(1) identifies it as: ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie, Apple
QuickTime (.MOV/QT) 

xine sort of plays the audio, but no video appears.

Original miniDV footage also imported via iMovie,
file(1) identifies as: DIF (DV) movie file (NTSC)

xine plays the video ok, but the audio is garbled, I can pick up a word
or two, but not intelligible.

Video copied from a Canon VIXIA HF S2000 (sd card) might have been imported
via iMovie also identifies as: ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie, Apple
QuickTime (.MOV/QT)

xine displays only blank video and partial audio

Video from various iPhones and Canon DSLRs (D7, D5)
also identified as ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie, Apple
QuickTime (.MOV/QT)

xine plays just fine.

iMovie edited videos xine plays the video ok but audio is garbage,
echoes, gaps etc.

I have tried playing with the various audio and video driver options
listed by xine --help, but none seem to make any difference.

Suggestions/clues most welcome.
