I pushed a commit today [1] that fixes a kernel panic that occurred while
hot-unloading snd_hda(4), which in turn caused a similar issue to we are
talking about, on my machine. What you are describing sounds somewhat similar.

Please apply this patch, recompile snd_hda(4), or the whole kernel if you have
snd_hda(4) built into it, and let me know.
