I'll update later today but this issue has been present for 3 years now.

I forgot I did try this and just tried it again the audio pops are still there 
even with the nvidia driver unloaded.  Same video in Xorg with video / no video 
same pops .. and on the commandline with no nvidia driver / no video has the 
same sound pops.  They aren't consistent.

I would hazard a guess it's something to do with the scheduler because you can 
almost predict when a pop will happen based on what's playing or load.  It makes 
sense that browsers cause more pops as playing a video is a lot heavier with no 
acceleration.

If I use hardware decoding using mpv the pops are still there but much quieter 
and shorter.  With direct CPU decoding they're louder / longer.

The logs here show what's going on and I recently checked last week and the same 
error messages still appear:
