Not sure I can help, but what exactly are you playing?
2-channel audio or 5.1 movie surround sound?
Maybe you could post the output of

> sysctl dev.pcm.9

and

> sysctl hw.snd.verbose=2
> cat /dev/sndstat

while playback is running (only the pcm9 part). The latter is somewhat cryptic,
it shows what formats and conversions are used between software and hardware.
