If you bind to the wildcard address (either '0.0.0.0' or '::') it will open an socket accepting both IP= v4 and IPv6 traffic. From what I understand, the FreeBSD sysctl net.inet6.ip6.v6only determines = if IPv4 mapped addresses are accepted or not. By default they are not, and enforced by the OS. Not sure if that answers your questions, or if there's something I missed.
