Thank you, everyone, for the testing and confirmations. Upgrading/installing
alsa-plugins was, what it took to get the sound working for me on both systems
I tested:

Dec 19 12:28:59 symbion pkg[71677]: alsa-lib-1.2.2_1 deinstalled
Dec 19 12:29:00 symbion pkg-static[71773]: alsa-lib-1.2.14 installed
Dec 19 12:41:26 symbion pkg-static[78396]: alsa-plugins-1.2.12_1 installed

-- maybe, this should be reflected in the pkg-message or some other
documentation. That's the good news.

The not so good is that the code is still looking for stuff under /dev/snd,
which does not exist on FreeBSD. But aplay -L does that too, so it is not a
Java-problem...
