Forget anything else, use FreeBSD as a daily driver before even thinking about contributing anything. Start by migrating one or a few of your existing workloads to a FreeBSD instance and take note of how they work or not. While doing so you may notice some other things that are not quite up to snuff that may or may not have been reported or worked-in-progress.
