in order to not completely lose my mind, i created this:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
#!/bin/sh -Cefu
set -Cefu
diff_opts_full=
diff_opts_no_color=
case "$*" in full' '*) diff_opts_full=-U1000000 ; shift ;; esac
case "$*" in nocolor' '*) diff_opts_no_color=--no-color ; shift ;; esac
(
git diff --color $diff_opts_full $diff_opts_no_color $*
for file in `git ls-files -o $*`
do
git diff --color $diff_opts_full $diff_opts_no_color \
/dev/null "$file" | cat
done
) | less -InR
----------------------------------------------------------------------
minus the weird options and their required order, it even does the job, if you also remember where to do your diff from
but it doesn't touch the repo at all. i don't know why getting diff would need local repo messing too
workdir changes are easy to spot with standard commands, but if you start doing those other ops, how could you ever get it back. and then you can't get rid of repo too as your local changes are somehow stashed into bowels of it
it's as if git assumes remote repo cloned out has write permissions
if no, then only way to properly work is to bring repo to about to commit state or even localcommitted state and then back changes out again. well if you committed then you can't really
how, just hooooow, do all the devs work on git repos if they don't commit from repo? all that makes me brain hurt
and back then we had port submit from porttools which portlinted the new dir and sent it as shar with send-pr
unsure if it was hard to receive them that way but in nowhere in that step i needed to curse bucketload of profanities to any current fbsd vcs. iirc it was either svn or still cvs back then
it also had csup for low effort src syncing. losing your mind was not required
and also i realized that arc also doesn't like untracked, etc, so i battled with it until i found a hack
i have absolutely no idea how people could ever contribute like this. you tell that there are other ways. must be, as noone really does this
how can it be that it was better back then. for me, as starter. than now, as "continuer"...
