EIA-608 is a character encoding used in closed captions in video streams. It strongly resembles traditional ASCII but it's not exactly the same as any of the ISO8859 variants. In particular it has encodings for certain accented characters and also the eighth note (♪). I have a collection of subtitle files which all seem to be in UTF-8 format, but as far as I can tell, "iconv" doesn't know about EIA-608. Also, ffmpeg and mplayer seem unable to convert from UTF-8 to EIA-608. Is there some other utility that can do it? -- George
