I rebooted to generate another dmesg & relevant wpa,dhclient messages.
These are attached. 

In wpa-dhclient.txt there's a load of these lines:

Dec 26 09:42:13 desktop wpa_supplicant[92560]: wlan0:
CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-FAILED ret=-1 retry=1
Dec 26 09:42:14 desktop wpa_supplicant[92560]: ioctl[SIOCS80211, op=103,
val=0, arg_len=128]: Operation now in progress

until I run 'ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 up' where you'll see
it connects.
