OK, this was actually a local problem. For days now I've been trying to figure
out what happened upstream, but when I extracted the i386 tarball, I realized
it was corrupted and truncated. I accepted the upstream file (the first <n -
~100> bytes up to the version I had were identical, and the last 100 or so were
just different).

This is fixed in main and quarterly.
