PING
i would like to see this committed, but rather in the hard links form. the
upstream discussion seems to indicate that to be the desirable solution, if
only not for concerns of theirs irrelevant to us, concerns which we already
avoid or rectify by inherent nature of ports and pkg (ive never seen Firefox
self-update on freebsd. can it even try? would we ever want it to?)
upstream seems to have given up or punted here, considers it a dead issue, yet
we can and should do better; we dont have to support umpteen widely differing
platforms. i understand and accept their stance. so pressing the issue upstream
seems futile and misdirected
perhaps in maintainer mode the port would also confirm they're identical,
regular files before linking, warn otherwise, just in case upstream one day
decides to act on this ancient bug
wasting 760 KB of storage space for no applicable reason or loading two
different but identical elf.text sections one right after the other, only to
then quickly discard the first, is certainly a bug. please spare us the "my
computer and yours each have a gazillion gigaquads anyway"
