Might you be able to check if getting to the point of no
snapshots and then doing the independent boot export/import
sort of activity helps?

As far as I can tell, the explorations may be leading to an
upstream bug report by someone with the problem. (Although,
the explorations are not good for identifying how the
problems started.)

Another point is that while the large files that were
deleted make them noticeable, I wonder if there might also
be a backlog of a large number of tiny files sitting in
the delete queue for a long time, with no links as well.
