Just some extra related notes (likely not tied to solving the 
specific contexts here from what I can tell):

For active mount points that have a parent dataset containing 
the directory used as the mount point, if that directory has 
files before the mount, that space in the parent becomes none 
accessible. Temporarily dismounting can make the path use 
the parent dataset and provide access for possible cleanup.
