Oh, sorry, almost forgot:  Yes, I did try your suggestions, and many other
combinations and variations.  The system logs indicated syntax errors. 
Attempts to mount remotely failed, even for the unrestricted filesystem.

I appreciate your help and persistence on this.  If you still want to pursue
this further, I am happy to assist using my test setup.  But even while doing
so, I am aware that this is works-as-designed, or "feature," or what have you. 
It might be interesting to peruse the RFCs to see what they say about this, but
any clearing up of confusion will likely be left to some future version of NFS,
in order to avoid back-compatibility breakage.
